Hair Transplant Aftercare: Essential Tips for Faster Healing and Optimal Results

Hello!

Hair transplantation is a delicate microsurgical procedure. The survival of newly implanted grafts depends not only on surgical technique, but also on proper post-operative care.

Following the correct aftercare protocol protects the grafts, supports healing, and maximises long-term growth outcomes.

The First 24 Hours: Protecting Newly Implanted Grafts

The first day is critical, as grafts are not yet fully anchored in the scalp.

Do not wash your hair for the first 24 hours. Early washing may dislodge grafts before they stabilize.

Stay well hydrated. Drink plenty of clear fluids to support circulation and tissue repair.

Avoid alcohol and cigarettes for at least 48 hours. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and reduces blood flow to grafts. Alcohol may increase swelling and bleeding risk.

Sleep with your head elevated. Use two pillows for the first few nights. Elevation reduces swelling by limiting fluid accumulation in the forehead and face.

Keeping the Grafts Moist

Hydration of the grafts improves survival and reduces crust formation.

You will be provided with a saline spray.

  • Spray the grafted areas every 15 minutes while awake until the bottle is finished.

  • Keep the grafts lightly moist, not soaked.

You will also be given Calecim Stem Cell serum.

  • Apply a few drops every 3 hours.

  • Gently dab over the grafted area.

  • Allow the serum to absorb for 30 minutes before resuming saline spray.

Allow the serum to absorb for 30 minutes before resuming saline spray.

Hair Transplant Aftercare – Day 1

  • Take prescribed painkillers and antibiotics as directed.

  • Attend your scheduled post-operative follow-up for early assessment of graft stability.

Most discomfort is mild and manageable.

Hair Transplant Aftercare – Day 2 to Day 7

Gentle care is essential during this period.

Washing instructions:

  • Use the provided gentle baby shampoo.

  • Wash only the back and sides directly.

  • Bend forward when rinsing

  • Allow lather to flow gently over the grafted area.

  • Do not rub, scratch, or use fingernails on the grafts.

Mechanical trauma can dislodge grafts.

Continue:

  • Saline spray as instructed

  • Calecim serum application

  • Sleeping with head elevated

Activity:

  • Light jogging and light weightlifting are permitted.

  • Avoid strenuous workouts.

  • Avoid chlorinated pools, saunas, and steam baths for two months.

Heat and chemicals can irritate the scalp and affect graft survival.

Swelling:

Mild forehead swelling may occur and move downward toward the face.

  • Gently massage upward and outward in the shower.

  • Ice may be applied to the forehead (not directly on grafts) for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours.

Hair Transplant Aftercare – Day 7 to Day 10

  • Normal physical activities may resume.

  • If scabs remain, gentle fingertip rubbing in the shower is allowed.

  • Do not forcibly pick scabs.

Allow them to fall off naturally.

Low-level laser therapy is recommended during this stage to support healing and stimulate early growth.

Hair Transplant Aftercare – Day 10 Onwards

You may resume your normal hair washing routine.

If scabs persist:

  • Stay in the shower slightly longer.

  • Apply conditioner for 5–10 minutes.

  • Gently massage to loosen remaining scabs.

Removing scabs reduces the risk of infection and folliculitis.

Long-Term Maintenance: Preserving Your Results

Hair transplantation redistributes existing hair. It does not stop ongoing hair loss.

To maintain and enhance results, long-term therapy is strongly encouraged.

Depending on your case, recommendations may include:

  • Finasteride as prescribed

  • Minoxidil (5%, 6–8 sprays twice daily)

  • Hair supplements

  • Low-level laser therapy (three times weekly, 20 minutes per session)

  • Regenera Activa
