They are generally round or oval, uniform in colour, and can appear anywhere on the skin. However, not all moles are created equal; some may require closer attention due to their potential to develop into skin cancer, particularly melanoma. Asymmetry
If one half of the mole looks different from the other half.
Border
If the border is irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred.
Colour
If the colour is not uniform throughout, with shades of tan, brown, black, red, white, or blue.
Diameter
If the diameter is larger than 6mm.
Evolving
If there are changes in mole size, shape, colour, elevation, or other traits, or if new symptoms such as itching or bleeding develop.

The mechanism involves an emission of a specific wavelength of light that is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the mole. As the light energy is absorbed, it is converted into heat, causing the pigmented cells to break apart and fragment.
These fragments are then gradually absorbed and cleared away by the body’s lymphatic system. The laser’s precision allows it to target only the mole, minimising damage to the surrounding skin and reducing the risk of scarring.
This method is particularly effective for small, flat moles not deeply rooted in the skin.
Cryotherapy removes moles by freezing the targeted tissue with liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen, which has a temperature of approximately -196 degrees Celsius, is applied directly to the mole using a cryoprobe or a cotton swab.
The extreme cold causes the water within the mole’s cells to freeze, forming ice crystals that disrupt cellular membranes and structures. The frozen cells then die and are sloughed off naturally by the body over time. The freezing also induces localised inflammation, which aids in the removal of the dead tissue.
This method is most suitable for superficial, benign moles, as deeper freezing may damage surrounding tissues.
Electrosurgery involves the use of high-frequency electric currents to remove the mole by generating heat that vaporises the tissue. The procedure typically uses a fine wire loop or needle as an electrode to conduct the current.
As the current passes through the tissue, it produces heat, which not only vaporises the mole but also cauterises blood vessels to minimise bleeding. The heat causes proteins within the cells to coagulate, leading to cell death. The damaged tissue is either removed during the procedure or falls off naturally over time.
Electrosurgery is particularly suitable for treating raised moles, where precise control over the depth and area of treatment is required.
Surgical excision involves removing the mole along with a margin of surrounding tissue using a scalpel. This method is commonly recommended for larger moles, those deeply rooted, or those suspected of malignancy. Performed under local anaesthesia, the procedure may require stitches.

Preparation:
The area around the mole is cleaned with an antiseptic solution and marked for precise targeting. Depending on the patient’s pain tolerance and the location of the mole, a topical anaesthetic cream may be applied to numb the area. Surgical excision requires injection of local anaesthesia to provide comfort during the procedure.
Depending on the removal method chosen, the treatment process will vary:
Laser removal
The doctor will adjust the settings (wavelength, intensity, and duration) to match the mole’s size and pigmentation. The laser probe is precisely positioned over the mole. Short pulses of laser energy are directed at the mole, breaking down the pigment. The probe is moved over the mole until it is fully treated.
Surgical excision
A scalpel is used to remove the mole along with a small margin of surrounding healthy tissue. For deeper or larger excisions, absorbable sutures are typically used to close the deeper layers of the wound. Our doctors employ an “invisible” stitching technique on the skin’s surface, using fine, non-absorbable sutures that provide strong wound closure while minimising visible scarring.
Surgical excision allows for the complete removal of the mole, which can then be sent for biopsy if necessary.
Electrosurgery application
Our doctor will use a fine needle or wire loop electrode connected to an electrosurgical unit. The needle or wire loop is applied to the mole, and the electrical current generates heat to burn and vaporise the mole tissue.
Cryotherapy Application
A spray device or a cotton-tipped applicator dipped in liquid nitrogen is used to apply the freezing agent directly to the mole. The duration of application depends on the mole’s size and depth. The freezing causes the mole to turn white and harden as the cells freeze.
Laser Removal, electrosurgery, and cryotherapy result in tissue destruction, making it impossible to retrieve a viable sample for histological analysis. This should be discussed during the consultation.

Manage Redness and Swelling:
Redness and swelling are common after laser treatment. Applying cold compresses can help alleviate these symptoms. Your doctor may also recommend specific aftercare products to soothe the skin.
Sun Protection
Avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area. Once healing has progressed, apply sunscreen to protect the area from UV rays and prevent pigmentation changes.
Moisturise the Scab
After cryotherapy, a scab will likely form over the treated area. Keep the scab moisturised with Vaseline or an antibiotic ointment to promote healing and prevent excessive dryness. Do not pick at the scab; allow it to fall off naturally.
Sun Protection
Protect the treated area from sun exposure by using sunscreen once healing allows, to avoid pigmentation changes.
Handle Blisters with Care
Blisters may form after electrosurgery. Do not pop them, as this can increase the risk of infection and slow down the healing process. Let the blisters resolve naturally, and follow any specific care instructions provided by your doctor.
Sun Protection
After healing begins, apply sunscreen to the treated area to prevent pigmentation changes due to sun exposure.
Stitch Care:
If your mole was removed via surgical excision and stitches were placed, avoid getting the area wet, and minimise movement to reduce the risk of wound separation. Follow your doctor’s instructions for wound care, and return for suture removal as scheduled.
Prevent Infection
Keep the treated area clean and dry to prevent infection. Avoid any unnecessary contact with the area until it has fully healed.
Natural Healing
Allow any scabs or crusts that form to fall off naturally. Picking or scratching can lead to scarring or infection.
Follow-Up Appointments
